The Government Medical College& Hospital, Dindigul, one of the premier Institutions in the country, in its early days was started as a dispensary at Salai Road, Dindigul in the year 1923. The Hospital moved out of the Salai Road and was housed at the Trichy Road, when it was upgraded as a Taluk Hospital with a bed strength of 60 in 1962.
After being announced as a separate district in 1984, the existed Taluk Hospital was upgraded into the District Headquarters Hospital with a bed strength of 170 with all amenities including the services for accidental and emergency care with a CT scan availability.
By the year 2008, Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and New born Care (CEmONC) Centre with sufficient man power and infrastructure was established to provide adequate care for the mother and the new born round the clock. In 2014, the accident and emergency wards were upgraded to a Level II trauma care with all required facilities. Seperate wards for radiology and burns started to function in 2014.
The total bed strength increased to 390 in the year 2015 and to 690 in the year 2019. In the early part of 2020, proposals were submitted to the Government to accord the status of a College. The Government granted this request and from 1st March, 2021 it became Government Medical College, Dindigul. In 2020, it gained affiliation to “The Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University”. This Instituition has been approved by the National Medical Commission. After the affiliation and approval, the College moved to be a center of excellence imparting training in all the specialities in the field of medicine and surgery and it is now one of the premier institutions in the country.
The first batch of 150 MBBS students made their entry on 14th February, 2021. Currently this Institution hosts three batches of MBBS students and
